Year 1

Welcome to Year One!

The Autumn term is such a fun and exciting time for the children as they get to know their new teachers, learning environments and all the different areas of learning they will explore. In PSHE they will be generating their own class rules to follow and ensuring they are being “the best they can be!”

We shall also be concentrating on a smooth transition for them all as they move to a different curriculum and our teaching and planning is continuously adapted with this in mind, to ensure the best outcomes from all the children.

In theme lessons we are going to explore our attack and defence topic: “Remembrance.” Within this we shall be exploring the importance of the Poppy on Remembrance Day and the children will be designing and creating their own Poppy showcase piece. In Science we shall be exploring the differences between animals and humans, with a special visitor later in the term. We shall be doing lots of fun activities, encouraging the children to think for themselves in our Philosophy for Children sessions, including what they think about if the rain was made out of chocolate.

Maths this term is focusing on Place Value, with an emphasis on number recognition, ordering and counting numbers reliably and using a range of resources to practically make and explore numbers up to 100. We will then be moving onto addition and subtraction, coin values, shapes and number bonds to 20.

During our Talk for Writing sessions, the children will learn a variety of texts through pictorial representations and actions. During our poetry units, the children will learn ‘the bug chant. We will then move on to looking at a quest/journey story called ‘Butterfly Island’ and learning ‘How to look after butterflies’ as a set of instructions. We will be exploring many different text types and making links through stories they already know.  The children will have lots of opportunities to immerse themselves in the text to support them in innovating the text to create their own.

Phonics will continue to be taught daily, with an emphasis at the beginning of the term on class needs and then moving on to whole class teaching of the sound families.
