Reading (Beyond ELS)

Year 2 onwards

As part of the GLA, Bishop’s Cleeve Primary Academy strives to deliver a reading curriculum rooted in the acquisition and development of language. Through a carefully structured and progressive programme, children build upon their knowledge of phonics, decoding and blending to become confident, fluent readers who can fully immerse themselves in a rich range of literature. We believe that reading is the gateway to learning and that every child has the potential to become a lifelong reader. Children develop their reading skills through exposure to increasingly challenging texts, enabling them to strengthen their comprehension, vocabulary and understanding of language. They are encouraged to apply these skills across the wider curriculum, supporting success in all areas of learning. Reading for pleasure is at the heart of our curriculum. We foster a love of books by providing children with access to high-quality

texts, engaging reading opportunities and enriching literary experiences. We recognise the importance of children hearing, sharing and discussing stories, poems and non-fiction texts, helping them to develop curiosity, imagination and a genuine enjoyment of reading. We also place great value on the re-reading of texts. Through repeated reading, children develop familiarity, fluency and confidence, enabling them to read with increasing accuracy, appropriate pace and expression. As their fluency grows, children learn to use intonation and prosody effectively, enhancing both their understanding of a text and their enjoyment of it. Enriching experiences enable a love of reading to flourish while stimulating meaningful discussion and reflection. The books we choose either expose children to worlds beyond their own experiences or deepen and broaden their understanding of experiences they may already have encountered. Through literature, children develop empathy, cultural awareness and an appreciation of diverse perspectives. Aspiration sits at the heart of our reading curriculum. Children understand that everyone at Bishop’s Cleeve Primary Academy can be a successful reader and will be supported to achieve their full potential. We nurture this belief by celebrating the joy that reading brings and by introducing children to a diverse range of inspirational books.
