Year 6 is a very important and action packed year that we hope will give our pupils some excellent lasting memories of their last year in our school. Much of the first half of the school year is spent preparing the children for SATs. Once the SATs are over the children rehearse for their end of year performance, enjoy a week-long residential trip in the Brecon Beacons and take part in induction days at their chosen secondary school.
Our topic for the Autumn term is 'The Rainforest - Power' and much of our work will be linked to this. We will explore geographical locations, the rainforest environment, plants and animals habitats, conservation, deforestation and tribes. Our science focuses will be Evolution and Adaptation. We will look at the work of Charles Darwin and Mary Anning alongside how animals adapt to their habitats.
In Literacy, we will be looking at character description, non-chronological reports, setting description and persuasive arguments. The children will read in school every week and the focus will be on understanding texts - author's intent, characterisation and writer's techniques.
Numeracy will focus on place value, rapid recall, fractions, decimals and percentages, statistics and position.
In PE we will be learning frisbee skills, doing a rainforest dance, playing netball and doing some gymnastics.
The children will continue to learn French, increasing their vocabulary through a range of activities and games.
