Autumn Term 2017
Year 5 marks the move for children from lower to upper Key Stage 2. The essence of this year is to provide the children with many opportunities to gain in independence and to seek out and accept greater responsibility. Our Year 5 children become hot dinner monitors and can learn to be ‘good buddies’ for our younger children. They will participate in peer mediation and will learn many valuable ‘life skills’. During the Summer term of this academic year we will teach Sex Education for the first time. We continue to build upon the curriculum from Year 4 and to prepare the children for their final year at Bishop’s Cleeve Primary School in Year 6.
This term the children will learn about the creation of the Solar System as well as studying how the position of the Earth in the Solar System creates the phases of the moon. We shall also delve into early space exploration, learning about the Space Race through creating a timeline and propaganda style posters.
Later in the term, we shall visit Leicester Space Centre to gain an insight into space exploration through interactive workshops and the prestigious planetarium. We will look into different forces, with a particular focus on gravity. Towards the end of term, we shall make our own rockets from water bottles before launching them on the school field.
In English, many writing opportunities will be created as the children delve into Herge's TinTin: Destination Moon and write a brochure about their own newly designed planets. We will learn about Winter Haikus in poetry and we will also cover numerous texts during reciprocal reading as well as poetry and playscripts.
The children will also be enjoying gymnastics, circuits and netball during the first half of term and hockey in the second half of term.
During the Autumn term we will be studying many different aspects of maths. These will include arithmetic, place value, rapid recall of addition and subtraction, fractions, rapid recall of multiplication and division and formal written methods of all four functions.
Our computing sessions will focus on Lego Robotics this term.
Spring Term 2018
This term Year 5 will be learning about 'The Terrible Tudors'. We will be looking into the reign of Henry VIII of England, his wives and life as a Tudor. We shall also be studying William Shakespeare, focusing on his plays during that era and linking to uor English where we will be studying Macbeth. As part of the art this term, tied in with our theme, the children will create witch puppets to be on display at the curriculum evening. Later in the year we will visit Mary Arden's Farm to gain an insight into Tudor life and what it would be like to be a child during the Tudor era through interactive workshops and experiencing a typical Tudor day.
In English, Talk for Writing takes the children through the learning journey where we will look at setting description based on Macbeth and an explanation text on 'How to Spot a Witch'. The children will incorporate lots of drama, story-mapping and shared writing to support them through the units. We will tie in all book club sessions with English and cover numerous text as well as poetry and play scripts.
In PE the children will have the opportunity to be involved in the fun fit sessions from an external coach, outdoor tennis and creating their own Tudor dance.
During the Spring term in maths we will be studying statistics, time, place value, decimals and percentages, shape and position.
Summer Term 2018
This term Year 5 will be 'Walking on the Wild Side'!
After an amazing WOW day, the focus in theme will be to develop their geography skills primarily through map reading and orienteering - creating their own compasses. We shall also be writing our own adventure stories based around the Deadly 60 reporter Steve Backshall. As part of the art this term, tied in with our theme, the children will create their own David Zinn street art and African inspired pencil drawings. Later in the term, the children will endeavour to complete the infamous Golden Envelope Challenge (around Bishop's Cleeve).
In English, Talk for Writing takes the children through the learning journey where they will complete an adventure story on Steve Backshall and a discussion about animals in captivity. The children will incorporate lots of drama, story-mapping and shared writing to support them through the units. We will tie in all book club sessions with English and cover numerous texts as well as poetry and play scripts. Finally, the children will be able to showcase their public speaking in their Choral Speaking performance to the rest of KS2.
In PE, the children will have the opportunity to be involved in cricket sessions facilitated by an external coach, athletics and orienteering around the school grounds.
During the Summer term in Maths, we will be studying Fractions, Measure, Statistics, Money and Formal Written Methods of all four operations.
