Year 3

Autumn Term 2017

Year 3 is an exciting year for the children when they move from KS1 to KS2. We try to make the transition as enjoyable as possible for the children. Children will come into school via the junior playground and parents will leave them at the school gates unless they need to see the class teacher. We try hard to increase the children’s independence as they move through the school.

GROUP OF CHILDREN

Our topic for the Autumn Term is 'Professor Potts'. Professor Potts, an intrepid explorer, camped in the school grounds over the summer holidays. He is travelling the world, following in the footsteps of his grandfather, Professor Gideon Potts, a world renowned monster-catcher who explored the world 100 years ago. Professor Potts junior left copies of the book detailing his grandfather's adventures, 'The Diary of a Monster-Catcher' and clues on how to find them hidden in the school grounds. Can we succeed in our first challenge to develop our orienteering and problem solving skills to retrieve the books? On his travels, Professor Potts will discover an array of weird and wonderful monsters, plants and rocks, and use a variety of means of transport to travel the world. Can we develop our skills and knowledge and help him out on his expeditions? We will need to develop our understanding of science, nature and geography to help him achieve his goals. Mrs Sanders will also be introducing the children to gardening and support their learning with her encyclopaedic knowledge of nature!

TWO CHILDREN IN CLASS

Computing will see us focusing on core skills such as typing and accessing the internet. We will then move onto  discrete computing lessons where the children will be introduced to computational thinking and algorithms and will be able to create sequences of instructions for on-screen sprites.

Maths targets this term will include place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. The children will be encouraged to apply their learning in context throughout lessons using our PACE acronym (Practise, Apply, Correct & Evaluate).

GROUP OF CHILDREN OUTDOORS

Our main focus in English lessons will be handwriting, focusing on improving the formation of cursive letters through a range of games and activities. During core English lessons we will also look at developing character writing skills and speech punctuation. We will also develop skills of persuasion through letter writing, and they will have the opportunity to complete shape poetry.

Weekly spelling and times tables tests will continue throughout the year. We will have daily group reading sessions and we expect children to read regularly at home.

GROUP OF CHILDREN LEARNING OUTSIDE

Our PE lessons will include football (ball control, teamwork, coordination) and gymnastics (jumping, rolling and sequences of movement)

PSHE sessions will look at the topic 'New Beginnings'. The children will have the opportunity to contribute their ideas towards establishing the class rules, learn more about each other's interests, gifts and talents, develop their understanding of feelings and ways to control them and develop their problem solving techniques. This will be followed by the unit 'Getting On and Falling Out', where they will learn a variety of strategies to cope with fallings out, and work on their self-esteem and diplomacy skills.

TWO CHILDREN WORKING IN CLASS

Spring Term 2018

During the Spring Term Year 3 will study America through a comparison to the UK. We will look at the similarities and differences between the two countries, including food, population size, cities/states, presidents and much more! We will be learning all about Christopher Columbus by designing our own map. The children will also learn about the different weather America experiences and the tourist activities you can do in different parts of America at different times of the year depending on the weather.

Englisg sessions will see us focusing on setting descriptions and non-chronological reports. Our setting work will be based on the film The Wizard of Oz.

To continue our learning on America we will write non-chronological reports about activitiesyou can do in America throughout the year, skiiing, snowboarding, shopping etc. We will then compare this to our own made up countries. I wonder what exciting and amazing activities we can dream up!

Maths targets this term will include place value, time and shape. The children are encouraged to apply their learning in context using our PACE acronym (Practise, Apply, Correct and Evaluate).

Weekly spelling and times tables tests will continue throughout the year. Daily group reading sessions will continue and we expect children to be reading regularly at home and changing their books independently.

Year 3 are very lucky and get to go swimming in the Spring Term. We will also have dance on a Tuesday afternoon.

Music lessons start in the Spring term. We will be following the Charanga music scheme, learning about Reggae music by singing and performing the sonf 'Three Little Birds' by Bob Marley.
