Year 2

What an exciting year we have ahead of us in Year 2! From bones to Barcelona, beanstalks to brachiosauruses, this year the classrooms will be brimming with learning that the children will take with them as they leave Key Stage 1.

The children will be developing their UNITED skills throughout the year to improve their learning abilities in preparation for what lies ahead in the Juniors. As part of this important year, we will be preparing ourselves for the statutory SATs (standardised assessment tests) in May 2018 and getting ready for this important week in the calendar.

Autumn Term 2017

Step back in time this term, Year 2 are going prehistoric! We will be immersing ourselves in our 'Dinosaur' topic for this first Autumn term. Alongside learning about the different dinosaurs that once walked this Earth, we will be using our UNITED skills to gather information on the different habitats around the planet and the types of dinosaurs that lived in them. Like all good palaeontologists, we will be researching facts and publishing our results in the form of non-chronological reports.

We will also be putting our creative hats on and designing our own dinosaurs before then transferring these into computerised images using some digital editing software. In case this all sounds a little too realistic, we will also be learning how humans first realised that dinosaurs once roamed the Earth and looking at the fossils that they left behind. If the children are still getting their Triassic mixed up with their Cretaceous, a trip to All Things Wild should clear things up for these little Jurassic learners!

Spring Term 2018

Hola mis amigos! Year 2 are going all Castilian this Spring Term. We will bepainting surrounding ourselves with Spanish culture from the past and present. We will be learning about famous artists such as Joan Miro and creating our very own magical realism artwork. We will be dipping into our UNITED skills again this term to gather information on the geography and climate of Spain. Just what we need to warm up the winter months! And if that isn't enough to get the Iberian culture flowing then grab your castanets, because we will be learning a Flamenco inspired dance throughout much of the beginning of the term.

group of childrenOur English Learning Journey will be taking us through many texts this Spring Term. The children will be developing story writing based on pirate tales, fantasy adventures and traditional tales. In preparation for the SATs in May, we will also be looking at some past papers during testing week so we can familiarise ourselves with what's to come in the Summer Term. Reading comprehension, spelling and grammar will be the focus as in previous years.

In Maths, we will be revisiting topics such as formal written methods for addition and subtraction, place value and multiplication. We will also be learning some brand new topic areas for Year 2, including fractions and statistics. Similarly with English, we will be looking at some past Maths SATs papers to get a feel for them before May.

Safer Internet Day signThe Spring Term brings us National Safer Internet Day on February 6th 2018. Year 2 will be learning about the dangers we are faced with on the internet and how we can keep ourselves safe. The children will be focusing what has been learned, and applying this by creating their own warning posters with an ICT twist.

Summer Term 2018

Child with a plantLet is grow! Let it grow! This term, Year 2 will be putting their science hats on and learning about a range of topics within nature. We will be starting off by learning about how plants grow and conducting an investigation into the ideal growing conditions. Before the plants grow out of control, we will be moving on to looking at the life cycles of different animals and learning about the characteristics of living things with a very helpful lady, Mrs Gren! It would be unfair to learn about all these wonderful animals and their habitats without getting up close and personal with a few of them, so to finish off the term we will be visiting Bristol Zoo!

In the depths of the coldest forests of the Arctic Circle lives a creature so rare that only Mr Hooper has ever seen one, it's called the Hampstion. It bears a striking resemblance to both a lion and a hamster. To go hand in hand with our Living Things topic, we will be creating our very own fact files about hybrid animals. Following on from this, the children will be learning about the features of a suspense text before creating their own. Nothing too scary we hope.

In PE the children will be focusing on athletics and covering a wide range of trackSports day and field disciplines in preparation for sports day in June. Following the half-term break we will begin to look at some outdoor team games such as cricket and rounders.
