Autumn Term 2017
Year 1 is a very important and exciting year for our children when they move from the Foundation Stage into Key Stage 1. We continue to build upon the progress the children have made during their Reception year and to encourage greater independence in subtle ways. We ask our parents to leave their children at the classroom door to give them responsibility for getting ready each morning. We recognise that it is sometimes more difficult for our parents than it is for our children!
We have been setting up our new classroom rules and have been familiarising themselves with their new surroundings. The focus for our PSHE lessons will be on settling into new routines. The children have had the opportunity to talk about settling into Year 1, voicing their worries and excitement. They will help to set classroom rules which will help to maintain a happy, focussed learning environment.
Our theme this term will be 'Once Upon a Time', a fairytale theme. The children will receive a letter from The Three Little Pigs, asking them to build a new house. They will be making masks and puppets of the characters to act out the stories in the home corner. We will also undertake an investigation about which material would be best for building a house and create a fair test to find out. We will talk about where we live and compare our own houses to The Three Little Pigs. At the end of the topic we will also have a WOW day, where the children can make gingerbread men, make shields and swords or tiaras and wands, and create their own story book.
Our daily Maths lessons will be based upon layered target steps. Targets this term will include place value, rapid recall of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, formal written methods of addition and subtraction and 2D and 3D shapes. Our Maths basic skills lessons will focus on reading and writing numbers to 20, time, using the +, - and = signs and fractions. We will also focus on counting forwards and backwards to 100, counting in multiples of 2s, 5s and 10s and number bonds to 10 and 20.
During our English lessons we will be looking at Talk 4 Writing to learn a variety of fairy tales through pictorial representations and actions. The focus on our first text of The Three Little Pigs will be story structure. next, we will be learning about the features of a character description and using nouns and adjectives to make our writing more interesting. Then we will introduce basic letter writing. During our basic English lessons we will focus on handwriting and punctuation.
In Computing, we will use Discovery Education for the children to explore how to create their own codes. They will learn how to make objects move in different directions and disappear. the children will be able to create, save and retrieve codes from the server.
Our PE lessons will focus this term on gymnastics and dance.
Mrs Powell will be teaching Music, exploring how to make different sounds with instruments and their voices.
Spring Term 2018
This term, we will be learning about the wonderful world we live in. We will be creating our own passports to 'travel' around the world exploring the seven continents and five oceans. Then, we will be learning about national geography such as the capital cities in the United Kingdom, physical features and famous landmarks. We will use our UNITED skills to undertake an investigation about the weather trends in Bishop's Cleeve. During the term, the children have the opportunity to plant their own beans and learn what they need to grow. They will track the growth of their bean and evaluate the methods they used. Then, we will learn about animals and habitats.
In our English sessions, we will be using Talk for Writing to learn a variety of texts through pictorial representations and actions. The focus on our first text of Meerkat Mail will be punctuation including the use of proper nouns. next, we will be learning about the features of a setting description where we will use our own experiences to write about Forest School using our senses, nouns and adjectives. Then, we will create a non-chronological report about a variety of animals that we have researched.
During the Spring Term, we will be starting a Book Club. This is an opportunity for your child to read in a group and gain a deeper understanding of different texts. As a group, we will follow the four steps of reciprocal reading which are; predicting, clarifying, questioning and summarising. We will continue to support reading through phonics games and other comprehension activities.
In Maths, we will be focusing on place value, rapid recall of addition and subtraction, time, fractions, shape and measure. The children will also develop their skills to apply and evaluate these mathematical skills in a variety of contexts.
In PE, we will be practising key skills, such as passing, space awareness and controlling a ball. The children will be playing small sided games to develop their teamwork skills. We are also lucky enough to have a specialist dance teacher coming in to support us with creating and performing a series of dance sequences. We will focus on animals from our 'what a wondeful world' theme and think about the control of our bodies and the movements different animals make. The children will be creating and performing a dance piece as a whole class.
Computing sessions will focus on using 2Publish to create an information poster on the weather on the weather and seasons. We will learn how to create and copy pictures and add information text. Then, we will learn how to store, retrieve and edit our work on the school server.
Music will continue to be taught by Mrs Powell. The children will be exploring how to make different sounds with instruments and their voices and then accompany them with appropriate percussion instruments.
The focus of PSHE lessons will be about keeping safe. We will be promoting internet safety where we will create and display posters on how to keep digitally safe. We will also learn about keeping safe in the world around us such as stranger danger, the use of emergency services, road safety and identifying safe places.
Summer Term 2018
This term has started off with a blast with our 'Out of this world' topic! We will be learning about astronauts and different expeditions into space, a variety of constellations and the order of the planets. The planetarium will be visiting school so we can take a trip through the galaxy whilst learning even more facts. We are looking forward to our WOW day where we will be decorating alien biscuits, creating space ships and masks.
In English, we are using Talk 4 Writing to learn a variety of texts through pictorial representations and actions. Our first story is all about Bob (who works on the moon). We will be making our writing more interesting and looking at more complex sentence structure and using conjunctions. Then, we will be writing a character description about the alien dog that Bob met on the moon before innovating our own.
In Maths, targets will include: place value, position, formal written methods of multiplication and division, fraction and time. The children will also develop their skills to apply and evaluate these mathematical skills in a variety of contexts.
We will continue to use reciprocal reading strategies in Book Club of predict, clarify, question and summarise. This is to gain further understanding of the texts and different genres we are reading. As always, we will have daily phonics sessions to continue to learn and apply a variety of sounds. This also prepares us for the phonics screening check which will be during the week commencing 11th June.
In our ICT lessons, we will be learning how to retrieve, create, store and edit digital content by making a PowerPoint presentations about the solar system. We will also practise creating our own codes to make a sprite perform a required action again.
PE will consist of creating and performing gymnastics sequences using the different ways of travelling and jumping we have learnt. In games, we will practise throwing and kicking a ball with increasing accuracy and developing small team games. We are also looking forward to participating in sports day.
In PSHE, we will be covering financial capability where we will discuss pocket money and the value of saving. Then, we will learn about living in the wider world, where we will learn about local and global communities, focusing on tolerance and respect.
We will continue to use Charanga in our music lessons. We will be listening and appraising a song called 'your imagination'. We will play a variety of musical games and activities with this and then perform the song with instruments.
