Autumn Term 2017

Reception year is a time of great change for both children and their parents. it is a very exciting time for children but it can also be quite tiring. We understand this and we have a lot of experience of helping children adjust to school life. We firmly believe that a close and supportive relationship with the parents of children in our care in invaluable in helping them settle in and progress well throughout their first year in school.

Our main focus in the first half term is to support your child as they make the transition from pre-school setting to school. We will be supporting your child as they make new friendships and become more familiar with school routines. We will be playing games, and enjoying lots of circle times to talk about ourselves, how we can be a good friend and deciding on rules for our classrooms. During this time we will be observing and getting to know your child, so that we have a sound understanding of what they can and can't do, and what their individual next steps for learning need to be. Every child is so very different!

Our Maths work this term will concentrate on recognising and ordering numbers and counting reliably. We will introduce addition and subtraction, through a variety of fun games, activities and songs. Children will learn to name various flat and solid shapes and they will learn to use both everyday, and mathematical language, to describe these shapes.

In our Literacy sessions we will be encouraging the development of language skills. This will involve many listening activities and opportunities to speak with increasing confidence in front of others. We will be reading lots of familiar stories and rhymes, and encouraging the children to 'have a go' at drawing and writing about them. As the term progresses, we will introduce the Jolly Phonics scheme. This teaches children their letters and sounds for reading and writing.

This term we will be celebrating several special days from varying cultures and traditions, including Diwali, Remembrance Day, Bonfire Night and, of course, Christmas! We will be introducing the children to various forms of technology around the classroom, including the class computer and interactive whiteboard, laptops and programmable toys.

From the very start of term we will encourage the children to express themselves creatively using a variety of media, for example painting, collage, music, song and dance. Specifically, we will be creating Bonfire Night pictures, Diwali decorations and Christmas cards amongst others.

Spring Term 2018

In literacy sessions we will be continuing to encourage the development of many speaking and listening skills. We will be listening to, learning and talking about different stories, as well as sequencing them and acting them out. Some of the texts we will explore are 'Brown Bear, brown Bear, What do you hear?' and 'Goldilocks and the three bears'.

We will be using our stories about bears as a starting point for much of our learning in 'Understanding the World'. For example, making porridge (exploring texture/taste/smell) and using ICT to research facts about bears. We will also learn about Chinese New Year, Shrove Tuesday and Easter.

We will continue the phonics scheme, and will begin to learn the 'diagraphs', or 'double letter sounds' such as  'ch', 'sh' and 'th'. We will also be sending some words home for you to practice reading and writing with your child.

This term in Maths, we will be learning about subtraction and multiplication. We will also re-visit shape, pattern and addition. As always our maths sessions remain heavily practical, and we encourage you to support your children in this way at home too. We use objects, our fingers and numbers around the classroom to help us.

We will use the wonderful illustrations of Eric Carle to inspire much of our creative work this term. We will be exploring various mediums such as paint, exploring textures and mixing colours, and collaging.

When it comes to homework, just as in the Autumn term, we will be sending home the Jolly Phonics sheets to accompany the sounds the children are learning. We encourage you to support your child in working on these. This is optional, although recommended.
