Sports & Healthy Living

We place a great deal of importance on providing the children in our school with as many sporting opportunities as possible. In addition we believe that our children should understand about the importance of keeping fit and following a healthy diet and lifestyle.

We have received Healthy Schools Status through the Department for Education and Skills national Healthy Schools Programme. This followed a number of whole school initiatives aimed at raising awareness of these issues.

We are committed to promoting physical activity and its’ lifelong benefits to all our pupils irrespective of their ability. Those children with special physical needs will be supported appropriately, allowing them to participate with their class.

We are very proud to be holders of The School Games Gold Award that recognises our commitment to the development of competition across the school. At the heart of the School Games is the understanding that competitive sport needs to be made accessible and enjoyable for all young people. By structuring competitive sport at a range of levels to suit the needs of their children, schools should be able to ensure that young people are able to take part in meaningful competitive sport at a level that is right for them. At our school, children are encouraged to take part in a wide variety of sports both during the school day and at a range of extra-curricular clubs. We also actively promote playground games at morning and lunchtime breaks.

The School Curriculum

Our school belongs to Cheltenham School Sport Network which includes the Cleeve cluster of schools. In line with the National Curriculum, all children in school receive at least two hours of quality Physical Education each week within the school day. Buying into the network allows us to bring in professional coaches to work with our children and our staff to develop new skills. To date we have employed the services of professional coaches in Rugby, Volleyball, Tennis, Jujitsu, Football, Multi-skills, Dance and Tri-Golf.

Our school actively encourages all children to participate in sport regardless of their ability. We want them to enjoy the benefits of being a team member and to learn to celebrate success and to accept failure with good grace.

We do also take part in competitive sport against other local schools including the Area Cricket Championship at Cheltenham Cricket Club and the County Championships.  We take part in the county  Quick Stix Hockey tournament  and the Cheltenham and District Primary Schools Athletic Association Inter-Schools Cotswold Shield competition at the Prince of Wales Athletics Stadium in Cheltenham. Other sports we compete in include Tag Rugby, Archery, Netball, Rounders, Multi-skills, Quadkids Athletics, Kin Ball, Gymnastics, Dance and Pentathlon. In addition, belonging to the Cleeve Cluster allows us to take part in a number of sporting festivals that have been organised by Cleeve school's sixth-form Sports Leaders. These have included:-

  • Hockey
  • Rounders
  • Kick Ball Rounders
  • Quad Kids
  • Multi-skills

Every year we recognise the effort and achievement of all the Year 6 children who have represented the school in a sport. We host a Sports Presentation Evening that is attended by children, parents and staff. When we can, we invite a local sporting hero to present the awards.

After School Activities

We offer pupils after-school opportunities to take part in sport and other fitness activities. We are proud of the range of sporting activities that take place outside school hours.
