At Bishop's Cleeve Primary Academy both French and Spanish are taught to our pupils in Year 1 to 6 by our dedicated language specialist, Ms Hatchell. We find that our children really enjoy learning a foreign language.

In Year 2 the children have half an hour a week of songs and games in Spanish. Through this they learn the basic vocabulary in a way in which they find it easy to remember. We will aim to cover the following general topics:-

  • The alphabet & greetings
  • Classroom objects, instructions & actions
  • Animals
  • Prepositions
  • Colours & pets
  • Christmas carols
  • Months of the year
  • Days of the week, seasons & weather

During the Autumn Term, Year 2 will learn how to greet people, simple classroom instructions, counting to 10, colours & animal names.

The children continue to learn Spanish in Year 3 and 4, increasing to 45 minutes each week. During these sessions they play games, sing songs and also have fun completing some activities in books. By the end of Year 4, the children have covered a wide range of topics including:-

  • Parts of the body
  • Transport
  • Clothes
  • Towns & directions
  • Zoo animals
  • Farm animals
  • Christmas carols
  • Numbers
  • Months & birthdays

During the Autumn term, the children in Year 3 will learn the numbers 11-31, how to describe themselves, how to talk about their family and also how to tell the time. The Year 4 children will learn how to talk about their favourite music, subjects they like at school, how to describe their daily routine and to talk about their favourite films.

In Year 5 and 6 we begin to teach the children French for 45 minutes each week. This helps to prepare them for secondary school. We use a lot of games, songs, picture books and stories. We find the children enjoy listening to, and speaking French and even practising how to do beautiful French handwriting.

In Year 5 we expect to cover such topics as:-

  • Greetings
  • Colours
  • Numbers
  • French handwriting
  • Alphabet & counting
  • Animals
  • Weather
  • Christmas theme
  • Days of the week & months of the year
  • Special festivals
  • Birthdays
  • Clothes

When the children reach Year 6 they are in their second year of learning French. Secondary schools require a basic knowledge of vocabulary prior to the children moving into Year 7. In Year 6 we revise the vocabulary from Year 5 and then build upon it with topics such as:-

  • Parts of the body & illnesses
  • Countries of the world and holidays
  • Map & geography of France
  • Sports
  • Hobbies & pastimes
  • Musical instruments
  • Christmas theme
  • Transport
  • Special festival days
  • Telling the time
  • 'My typical day'

During the Summer term of Year 6, the children sit a brief French test. The purpose of this test is to provide information for the secondary school to place children into sets when they start in year 7.
